Overview

This introductory course acquaints students with the basic rudiments of the Latin language. The course divides in two sections: an introduction to basic grammar (all the cases, declensions and indicative tenses) and "Plautus and the Roman Comic Tradition", in which grammar is revised and further grammatical practice given through modified texts of Plautus. Three plays (Aulularia, Baccides, Amphitruo) are featured. In order to read Latin with confidence students will be encouraged to understand it word-by-word and phrase-by-phrase in the order that it is written. A large number of exercises are therefore devoted to this end. On occasion, this course may require exploration of Rome in situ or through co-curricular public lectures.
