Overview

This course explores the themes of nationalism and national identity, as well as the marginalization of regional identities in modern Italian culture and society through the works of major Italian writers of the unification and post-unification periods.
The course will examine how nationalist discourse mobilized racial, cultural and linguistic boundaries as determinants of nationhood, paving the way for the later emergence of Fascism’s cultural nationalism.
