This module discusses the Homeric epics, exploring the contexts in which they were composed and the wider literary traditions to which they belong. Students will study a wide range of topics, including the historicity, morality, and literary merits of the poems, as well as their reception in antiquity and in recent times. The discussion of modern critical approaches to the interpretation of Greek epic will also be surveyed. Students who wish to study Greek at intermediate level may opt for the optional Greek language seminar attached to this module.
