This module contributes, along with Introduction to Linguistics and Language Society & Power, to giving first-year students a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of linguistic analysis and theorising. With its focus on how language encodes and communicates meaning, it provides an essential foundation for all students on the programme. An understanding of the issues and topics covered will provide a basis for much of the work on discourse offered to students later in the programme, such as Discourse and Conversation Analysis, Stylistics, English for Specific Purposes and Cross-cultural Communication. It also provides the basis for the HE2 level modules Semantics and Pragmatics.
