This module explores the relationship between performance, leisure and tourism in a variety of forms. It asks: 
• What does it mean for theatre to be packaged and sold to us as a leisure activity? 
• How is performance used within other spaces of leisure (including theme parks, museums and heritage sites)? 
• How are tourist sites staged? And how do tourists stage themselves? 
• Can theatre be a form of tourism? 
The module offers students the opportunity to engage with a range of disciplines (including sociology, cultural studies, archaeology and geography as well as performance studies) to examine the organisation and commodification of leisure in contemporary society. Students encounter both historical and contemporary ideas about free time, escape and experience, and reconsider the role of theatre and performance in relation to tourism.
