Assessment: critical commentary (1200 words) [30%], essay (2800 words) [70%]
The focus of this module is on teachers working lives, their role and function within schools. Teachers working lives and careers will be examined in terms of their professional identities, their emotional well being, the emotional practice of teaching, and the professional development of teachers. In order to examine teachers? work, the module also examines the organisational culture of schools. When considering schools as organizations the importance of leadership, communication and collaboration between teachers are considered in relation to teacher and school effectiveness. In addition students are encouraged to consider the impact that an emphasis on performance in schools - according to a narrow set of performance indicators - has on teachers and teaching. Finally we will examine pedagogy and importance of constructive teacher-pupil relationships.
