Overview

Assessment: essay (2000 words)
This module provides a core body of understanding for all HE1 level dance students, integrating the study of dance in its historical contexts with an introduction to the observable features of dance works. Students will develop skills in dance analysis, enabling the discernment of the elements which inform selected works. An understanding of the development of Western theatre dance will be established, highlighting artistic and contextual issues in the 19th, 20th and early 21st centuries and the historical context for the development of the dance techniques taught on the undergraduate programmes. The module will introduce students to processes of research in conjunction with developing skills in movement observation and description. Students will develop their ability to accurately communicate through verbal and written communication. Both aspects of the course will integrate a range of dance examples and resource materials.
