Second year, first semester course, up to two lectures per week, and weekly workshops.

The practice of history has been revolutionised over the past two decades by globalisation and the worldwide web which have broken the boundaries of nation states and demanded and facilitated new ways of understanding the past in terms of the circulation of ideas, people, commodities and institutions. This course applies this disciplinary revolution to South African national history demonstrating how it can be ?exteriorised? or turned inside out by focusing on the circulation of people, products and institutions in the shifting networks of mercantilist companies (18th century), empires (19th century) and nations (20th century). Students will be
equipped to practice as historians in this new milieu through extensive collaborative work, engagement with primary sources and the presentation of findings in both oral and written form in new media.

Assessment: Group work (20%); assignments (40%) 2-hour examination in June (40%).
