Overview

Course outline:
This course is an introduction to the science of engineering materials and the relationships between structure and properties. Topics include: Testing for strength, hardness, toughness, fatigue and creep. Interpretation of data. Elastic and plastic deformation of solids. Fracture. Visco-elastic and time dependent behaviour. The structure of crystalline, semi-crystalline and amorphous materials. Phase equilibrium diagrams, equilibrium and non-equilibrium structures. Heat treatment. Models of electrical conduction-development of band theory in metals, semi-conductors and insulators. Elements of corrosion science, deterioration and degradation of materials. The principles of reinforcement and design on the properties of composites. The selection of materials; and Case studies.

Assessment: Class record (30%), June examination 3 hours (70%).
