This module will explore the contribution of sociology to our understanding of childhood. Within sociology, the focus on children and childhood has moved away from traditional socialization theories, and has broadened out to include a wide range of theoretical and conceptual ideas. The students will be given an opportunity to think about the social meaning of childhood and how childhood is socially constructed. The substantive areas covered will include current anxieties ragarding sexuality and childhood and childhood and crime. Racism and disability also provide a framework for new ways of thinking about adult assumptions and children's experiences.
