Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course delves into the concept of Human Rights as recognized and safeguarded within the United Nations System, exploring the various organizations comprising the UN System and their interconnectedness. Beginning with a comprehensive introduction to Human Rights and the United Nations Organizations, the course lays the groundwork for understanding the mechanisms and instruments associated with the United Nations. We will examine each organization, division, and instrument that collectively form the UN System, exploring their missions, visions, and areas of expertise. Once foundational concepts are established, the course will shift focus to the practical workings of key UN bodies, including both charter-based and treaty-based entities. A significant portion of the course will involve interactive role-playing activities, allowing students to engage directly with the material under the guidance of the professor

Designed to provide students with a hands-on understanding of how the United Nations System operates and how human rights are protected under international law, this course is well-suited for students pursuing various career paths, including international relations, political science, international organizations, human rights, international law, or any other field with an interest in understanding the inner workings of the UN and its role in safeguarding human rights.
