Overview
* This is a supplemental 16-hour course that must be taken together with a 60-hour Spanish course.

Intermediate Conversation and Culture SPN-200
The course is designed for students with a basic communicative competency in Spanish that wish to complement an intensive Intermediate Spanish language course through emphasis on the oral ability and knowledge of cultural aspects. The course will be given twice a week, in two-hour sessions during one month.
Objectives:
- Upon course completion the student will have developed more confidence and ability to express themself in sociocultural contexts of the language.
Specific objectives:
- Give and receive information about means of transportation (schedules, prices, advantages, disadvantages of each means of transport, expressions related to transportation)
- Make plans for the weekend (budget, places to visit, accessing those places, itineraries)
- Describe and comment on the food of the main gastronomic zones of the country (expressions related to food)
- Tell anecdotes
- Give orders, recommendations or advice
- Develop the linguistic capacity to repeat dialogues, tongue twisters and sequences
- Argue topics related to Costa Rican culture
- Describe characters, historical events of Costa Rica
- Interview native Spanish speakers and share the results of the interview
Course content:
1. Las expresiones idiomáticas relacionadas con cada tema por tratar.
2. La narración de anécdotas, cuentos y leyendas.
3. La descripción de la comida, personajes y acontecimientos históricos de Costa Rica.
4. Las comparaciones entre rasgos de la cultura costarricense y rasgos de la cultura de los estudiantes.
5. Las opiniones sobre la cultura costarricense.
6. El planeamiento de viajes.
7. Las dramatizaciones de situaciones que se dan dentro de la cultura meta.
8. Las entrevistas a personas nativas de la cultura meta.
Orientaciones metodológicas:
El marco metodológico base del curso es el enfoque comunicativo, en el cual la transmisión del contenido es
prioritaria.
Mediante la selección de materiales elaborados para un objetivo didáctico específico y la puesta en práctica
de actividades variadas y participativas, como dramatizaciones, entrevistas, visitas, narraciones, debates,
concursos; se ofrece la oportunidad al estudiante de desarrollar su competencia comunicativa en español
como segunda lengua inmersa en la cultura costarricense.
